REPORT: Borj el-Shemali municipality denies removing tents of Syrian refugees
Head of the Borj el-Shamali municipality, Ali Dib, denied on Wednesday reports stating that the tents of Syrian refugees were removed from an unofficial camp in the town that is located in the district of Tyre.

“The reports are false and inaccurate,” Dib said to the state-run National News Agency.

Dib's statements were made two days after the municipality gave Syrian refugees a 48 hour ultimatum to evacuate their tents and leave the town “or else they will have to bear the consequences.”

He pointed out that the municipality agreed with the Syrian refugees to reside in their place of work to prevent any attacks against them.

Resentment by the Lebanese people against Syrian refugees is growing after Islamist militants from the Islamic State group and al-Qaeda-affiliate al-Nusra Front kidnapped in August several soldiers and policemen from the border town of Arsal while withdrawing from the village after clashes with the Lebanese army.

The militants have beheaded two of the kidnapped soldiers, sparking protests by their families, who have blocked roads and staged demonstrations across Lebanon.

Tents of Syrian refugees in Beirut's southern suburb neighborhoods of al-Lailaki and Hay al-Sellom were torched after the beheading.

Lebanon which is hosting more than 1.1 million Syrians fleeing their war-torn country is home to the highest number of Syrian refugees in the region, and to the highest refugee population per capita in the world.
