REPORT: Attorney in Ella Tannous' case appeals release of Dr. Issam Maalouf

The attorney representing the case of Ella Tannous raised on Friday an appeal against the release of pediatrician Dr. Issam Maalouf on a LBP 100 million bail.

On Wednesday (June 10) Beirut’s investigative judge ordered the release of Dr. Maalouf after questioning him in the presence of his attorney Sakher Al-Hachem and Dr. Jean Boulos, a representative of the Order of Physicians.

Following the session, attorney Al-Hachem noted that Maalouf did not misdiagnose the case of Ella Tannous.

The head of the Lebanese Order of Physicians Antoine Boustani declared on Tuesday (June 09) an open ended strike until the release of Dr. Issam Maalouf.

He also called on media outlets to tackle the issue of Ella Tannous in a "serious manner". Boustani stressed that doctors are not “infallible,” adding that in case a medical error is committed, legal procedures would take their course.

Last Friday, the Order of Physicians issued a work stoppage order at hospitals and medical clinics across Lebanon after police arrested a doctor accused of neglecting Ella Tannous, a baby patient whose limbs later had to be amputated.

The decision, announced at a news conference, came two days after Dr. Issam Maalouf was detained.
