Army Intelligence arrests suspect in al-Aqabiya incident, continues investigations
The Army Intelligence is currently holding the suspect who shot the Irish soldier in Al-Aqabiya along with other detainees.
 
Interrogations with the detainees are still ongoing, and a search is currently being conducted for additional people wanted on suspicion of having information relevant to the investigation or of having assisted in intercepting or destroying the vehicle belonging to the Irish battalion.
 
Eight days after the incident, which left the Irish soldier dead and two battalion members and two Lebanese hurt, the details of what happened that evening became apparent.
 
On Thursday night, two Irish battalion vehicles were heading to the Rafic Hariri International Airport. The first made it to the main highway, while the second, after stopping to handle some technical issues, lost its way and headed to the sea road.
 
The vehicle that got lost attempted to return to the highway to catch up with the other vehicle but instead took several side roads, raising the suspicion of several people who made several attempts to stop it.
 
As a result, the vehicle tried to flee again, running over one of the residents. Then, as the uproar grew more intense, the vehicle was approached, the back door was opened, and the Irish soldier was shot and killed.
 
The Army Intelligence investigations have produced a clear picture of what happened that evening. They will continue until the suspects are apprehended, the evidence is gathered and compared, and all of the incident's circumstances are uncovered.
