Abbess of Syria's Maaloula convent to LBCI: No attacks against Christian site

The Abbess of St. Taqla Convent in Syria’s Maaaloula, Mother Pelagia Sayyah, stressed that there were no attacks against churches and monasteries, noting that the Free Syrian Army gunmen and Salafists are still roaming the village.

Mother Sayyah pointed out, in a statement to LBCI, that clashes and exchange of fire had erupted overnight, stressing that the conflicts are ongoing on the outskirts of the village.

“The town’s residents are cautious, and only go out to buy bread and basic needs,” she added.

 Maaloula is a predominantly Christian village located northeast of Damascus, built into the rugged mountainside, at an altitude of more than 1500 meters. It is known as one of three places where Western Aramaic is still spoken, the other two being the nearby villages Jubb Adin and Bakh'a.
