The head of former Brazilian footballer, João Rodrigo Silva Santos, was found on the doorstep of his wife in his own backpack according to reports.

Local drug traffickers are suspect in the case as the police unit to which Santos's wife belongs to has been dismantling gangs following the program launched by the government for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

Thirty- five-year-old Santos, opened a food shop after retiring from football and was kidnapped on his way back home.

A friend of the family, Bruno Santos said that the former player was a good man and had no enemies.

João Rodrigo Silva Santos started his football career when he was 16 years old.

He played in several Brazilian teams and in Sweden.

His death comes at a time when the world is shifting its focus on Brazil as the country will be hosting the World Cup in 2014.
