Growth of twin panda cubs in Chengdu broadcast live on Chinese website

The growth of newborn twin panda cubs in southwest China began to be broadcast live on Friday morning on a popular Chinese video-sharing website.

Panda lovers from around the world began watching live streams of 40-day-old pandas, "Maoge" and "Maomei," on video-sharing website Youku Tudou at 06:30 on Friday.

"Maoge," the brother, weighs 1.53 kilograms, while the sister "Maomei" is 1.44 kilograms. They are expected to open their eyes in the next two days, according to a researcher at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in southwest China's Sichuan Province, where the pandas live.

The first live broadcast will run until 22:00 Friday and a second one will go on air between 08:00 and 20:00 on Saturday. After those, live broadcasts will be available every Saturday for the next three months.

Giant pandas are one of the world's most endangered species. About 1,600 pandas live in the wild, mostly in the mountains of Sichuan, while more than 300 live in captivity.
