Tunisian rapper sentenced to two years, clashes erupt outside court

Media reported said on Thursday that a Tunisian rapper was sentenced to two years of prison for insulting the police in one of his songs.

The sentence was announced by the judge at a court in the Ben Arous region of Tunis against Ala Yaacoub, who is known by his rap name of "Weld El 15".

Soon after clashes erupted outside the court between the Tunisian police and supporters of the rappers in protest of the verdict.

Several cases related to freedom of expression have emerged in Tunisia since the January 2011 uprising, and activists have often accused the ruling Islamist party Ennahda of seeking to oppress the masses.
