Sleiman calls on Lebanese politicians to be farsighted

President Michel Sleiman urged on Monday all politicians to be farsighted and engage in a calm dialogue to preserve peace and shield the country from the repercussions of regional turmoil.

Before his visitors in Baabda palace, Sleiman stressed that such progress will only be possible if all parties gather around one table and come to a mutual understanding.

“If state institutions are strengthened, work will be regulated in a calm and stable atmosphere, which is needed during this period”, Sleiman said.

Sleiman voiced hope that the Palestinian reconciliation, which Lebanon has always called for, will be an opportunity for both factions to promote Palestinian unity and raise pressing challenges. Sleiman highlighted the need for Palestinians to recover their rights, free their land and establish their independent state.

Sleiman met with Interior Minister Marwan Charbel to discuss the security situation and the ministry’s efforts aiming at maintaining peace and stability.

Sleiman also met with Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour to address the developments in the Arab world and the preparations for the upcoming periodic Arab summit in Baghdad.

UNIFIL’s new commander, Italian General Paolo Serra visited Baabda Palace. Sleiman wished Serra best of luck, emphasizing the importance for UNIFIL troops to work hand in hand with the LAF and respect resolution 1701.
