Fattouch told LBCI “Lebanon is passing through extraordinary and exceptional circumstances that grant parliament legitimacy to extend its mandate.”
In May 2013, parliamentarians made their way amid the demonstration of civil society activists to the Nejmeh Square where a law to extend parliament's mandate until the 20th of November 2014 was passed.
Then Prime Minister Najib Mikati had signed the law and referred it to the cabinet’s general secretariat which in turn referred it to former President Michel Sleiman.
In this context, Sleiman had signed the parliament’s extension decree so as to shorten the period for an appeal.
It is worth noting that Sleiman and the Free Patriotic Movement voiced their utmost objection to the aforementioned move, citing unconstitutionality as the main reason. For more details, watch Hoda Chedid report in the VIDEO above
