Lebanon, UNDP sign agreement to enhance Civil Defense

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel and UN Deputy Special Coordinator for Lebanon Robert Watkins signed an agreement on Wednesday to enhance the Civil Defense's work in Lebanon, in the presence of the Director General of Civil Defense Brigadier General Raymond Khattar.

In this context, Charbel said that this initiative aims at providing the necessary equipment to scale up the work of the General Directorate of Civil Defense according to international procedures applied in most of countries.

In addition, Charbel considered that this protocol is comprehensive and would foster the cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), adding that it would protect the country from natural hazards that Lebanon has so far failed to address efficiently.

For his part, Watkins said that the project is a strategic initiative that lays the foundation of a new cooperation between the Civil Defense and the UNDP, and stated that this cooperation resulted from inalterable ties and long partnerships that began following the July 2006 war.
