Ghannouchi calls for reinstatement of capital punishment in Tunisia

The leader of Tunisia's ruling Ennahda party Rachid Ghannouchi called for the reinstatement of capital punishment in the country. He made his statement after a guard at a nursery raped a three-year-old child last month, an incident which sparked national outrage.

In an interview, Ghannouchi stressed that the law of the death penalty "is normal", noting that “whomever threatens another person’s life should know that he is threatening his own life too.”

Media outlets and civil activists have called for the execution of the child rapist, even though the death penalty has not been applied for over 22 years.
