Sexual harassment of children reveals a grievous reality in Lebanon

According to a 2009 study conducted by the Ministry of Social Affairs in collaboration with several NGOs from the civil society, the Lebanese society faces an alarming problem with more than 885,000 mistreated children, 738,000 of which are sexually harassed while the other 219,000 are victims of sexual abuse.

At a time when more cases and live testimonies of sexual harassment and abuse are being reported in the streets, at schools, at home and even in entertainment spots such as cinemas, amusement parks and public parks, it became more difficult to find a solution for such a problem since many are unwilling to discuss the matter, especially those who have fallen victim to it.

Tania Tabet, a Himaya Association member told LBCI that their association is now providing a hotline for children or other victims of any harassment or even for witnesses to report cases of physical abuse.

Tania added that in addition to the hotline Himaya is providing social and psychological aid to all victims and to ensure that all those who suffer from such actions are given a safe place to stay.
