MP Jumblatt says all Lebanese leaders are "targets" of terrorist acts

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt said on Monday that the blasts that took place in the Dahieh and Roueis regions prove once again that terrorism does not differentiate between Lebanese regions.

In comments made to Al-Anbaa website, MP Jumblatt noted that " if some Lebanese leaders think that they are immune to terrorist acts, they must think again."

He also urged the Lebanese leaders to ease down their provocative rhetoric amid the tense situation witnessed in the country, slamming the calls for "self-imposed security."

MP Jumblatt concluded by saying that the Lebanese security apparatuses and the Lebanese Armed Forces will prevent Lebanon from being drifted into chaos.

On Friday the 23rd of August, two explosions rocked the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli near the al-Taqwa and al-Salam mosques, leaving 45 killed and almost 500 others injured.

In the details, one blast occurred outside the al-Taqwa mosque as Friday prayers ended, while the other the other hit central Tripoli near the al-Salam mosque facing the residence of the former general director of the Lebanese Internal Security Forces Major General Ashraf Rifi.

The al-Taqwa mosque is where hardline Salafist Sheikh Salem Rafei preaches. He has been known for his anti-Syrian regime sentiment.

Similarly, a powerful car bomb tore through the Beirut Southern Suburbs' region of Roueis, a stronghold of Hezbollah on Thursday the 15th of August, claiming the lives of 27 civilians and leaving more than 289 wounded, some of whom are still receiving treatment.

The violence raises the specter of Lebanon being pulled into the increasingly sectarian civil war raging next door in Syria.
