Adviser to caretaker PM Mikati, Fares Gemayel: Mikati is not funding gunmen in Tripoli

The adviser to the caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Fares Gemayel slammed on Sunday the accusations launched by Future MP Jean Ogassapian against Mikati.

Gemayel stressed that Mikati is not funding the gunmen in the northern city of Tripoli.

Gemayel's comments came during a phone call with Nharkom Said TV show in which he urged the lebanese leaders to ease down their provocative rhetoric.

Earlier in the show, MP Ogassapian accused caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati of funding the Islamists in the city.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
