President Sleiman calls for fair rulings in Tripoli, Dahieh massacres from Judicial Studies Institute

President Michel Sleiman said on Tuesday that Lebanon is in need of fair and firm rulings against the perpetrators of "massacres" committed in Beirut's Southern Suburbs and the northern city of Tripoli.

"We are adamant on moving forward and upholding Lebanon's values. The judicial sector's independence is crucial," Sleiman said during a ceremony marking the 50th foundation anniversary of the Institute of Judicial Studies.

"I urge you not to let fear affect your decisions which are issued in the name of the Lebanese people and this is what I called for in the speech I delivered on Independence Day," President Sleiman said addressing judges.

For his part, caretaker Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi noted that the judiciary's main problems stem from the country's internal situation and the political class, "The media's mainstreaming of judicial errors is unfair".

Qortbawi also said that judicial problems should be settled, adding that "only fair judges protect the Lebanese people regardless of their political standpoints".

"The judiciary has exerted unprecedented efforts in the last two years," he said.

The ceremony marking the 50th foundation anniversary of the Institute of Judicial Studies was held at the Beirut Justice Palace in the presence of President Michel Sleiman, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Prime Minister-Designate Tammam Salam.

President Sleiman arrived to the Justice Palace where he was received by caretaker Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi, the head of the Higher Judicial Council Judge Jean Fahed and senior judges.
