Secondary Teachers’ Union calls for strike in protest of wage-hike decision

The administrative board of the Public Secondary Education Teachers' Union refused the cabinet’s recent wage-hike decision, considering it humiliating for workers and employees, in addition to “not being responsive to their minimum rights and requests”.

The board added that besides being neglectful to the inflation levels cumulated since 1996, and that exceeded 100%, the decision is based on lump sums instead of percentages.

The cabinet approved on Wednesday a wage hike other than the decree proposed by Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas, where minimum wage increased by LL100,000 to LL600,000, salaries under LL1 million by 30% up to a LL200,000 increase, and salaries above LL1 million by a 20% increase up to LL275,000.

The board assured that they will stage a general strike and protests on Thursday 15/12/2011 in all high schools, public and private schools, all vocational and technical education schools and institutes, and the public administrations. It called on the secondary education teachers to participate in the demonstration that will start at 11 a.m. on the same day day from Beshara el-Khoury crossing – Sodeco, heading to the Grand Serail.
