US Department of State urges Lebanese parties to refrain from retaliatory acts

Deputy spokesperson of the US Department of State Mary Harf said that the United States strongly condemned “the terrorist bombing in the Haret Hreik region of southern Beirut,” expressing condolences to the victims and their families.

In this regard, Harf urged all parties to refrain from retaliatory acts that would further escalate tensions and threaten Lebanon’s stability, noting that the Lebanese people must be allowed to carry on their lives free from fear of attacks.

This as she reiterated in a statement the US’ support for the Lebanese Armed Forces and Internal Security Forces as legitimate government institutions that protect and serve all Lebanese, renewing the call for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions 1559 and 1701, the Taif Agreement and the Baabda Declaration to ensure Lebanon’s sovereignty.

A powerful explosion shook southern Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah, on Thursday 2nd of January, killing at least 4 people and injuring over 77 others. The explosion took place in al-Arid Street in Haret Hreik near Jawad restaurant only meters away from Hezbollah's political council, sources said.
