EDL contract workers have decided on Tuesday to reopen both sides of the Dora highway after workers delegates met with caretaker Labor Minister Selim Jreissati.
Following the meeting, Jreissati called on the KVA company to attend a meeting on Wednesday morning at the Labor Ministry and to re-employ the 62 sacked workers immediately.
"Wednesday's meeting will be decisive," he said.
This comes after EDL contract workers blocked the Dora highway in both directions, causing a severe traffic jam and leaving citizens stranded in their cars.
A scuffle had erupted between the workers and the Internal Security Forces which attacked the Head of EDL workers committee Lebnan Makhoul who was trying to block roads with burning tires.
The attack sparked outrage among the workers and caused a severe traffic jam.
This as, Makhoul stressed that EDL workers will not backtrack on their movement until the 62 sacked workers return to their jobs, noting that there is an attempt to suppress the workers.
In a phone call with LBCI, caretaker Labor Minister Salim Jreissati called on EDL workers to end their sit-in and to send a delegation to the Labor Ministry in order to find a solution to the problem.
"Blocking roads will not resolve the case nor achieve the wanted results," Jreissati said.
In turn, the head of the Public Works and Transportation Commission, MP Mohammad Qabbani told LBCI that the solution lies in the ratification of the law which was passed by the Parliamentary General Authority.
Later on, caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel telephoned Makhoul, urging him to reopen the road.
Following the Minister's phone call, EDL contract workers decided to hold a meeting in order to take the appropriate decision in this regard.
A crowd of EDL workers had gathered in the morning outside Tannous Tower near EDL headquarters in Corniche el-Nahr to protest a decision to dismiss a number of EDL workers.
EDL workers also vowed to take escalatory steps after they blocked the road in order to put pressure on the operating company to stop the alleged arbitrary expulsions.
EDL contract workers have been protesting for months calling on the government to employ them as full-time staff and to pay their salaries.
Their protests have included shutting the gates of EDL headquarters in Beirut and disrupting normal work at the state-run company.
