REPORT: LAF conducts motorized patrols in Tripoli as death toll rises to 7

Cautious calm, broken by sporadic gunshots,  overshadowed Tuesday Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli amid the heavy deployment of Lebanese Armed Forces units in al-Maloula roundabout, Syria Street, Talaat al-Chamal road and Jabal Mohsen.

The army is also conducting foot and motorized patrols while establishing checkpoints and checking the IDs of passersby.

Meanwhile, the traffic flow is normal in Tripoli while shops and public institutions opened their doors in a bid to push through the heavy economic losses entailed by the city.

On Monday night, sporadic clashes were reported and rocket-propelled grenades were randomly fired on houses.

An LAF soldier was wounded during Monday's clashes, while citizen Omar Alloush was killed in Bab al-Tebbaneh, bringing the death toll from the new round of violence to 7.

More than 58 persons were injured including 7 soldiers.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli. These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
