Number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon may reach one million

Director General of the Ministry of Public Health Dr. Walid Ammar said on Saturday that Lebanon needs, over one year, 400 million dollars to cover the medical expenses of the Syrian refugees, warning that the health sector is at stake.

In an interview with LBCI’s Nharkom Said TV show, Ammar said the Syrian refugees are living a tragedy, stressing that the Health Ministry is treating the Lebanese and Syrian nationals equally.

For her part, the spokeswoman of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Dana Sleiman, estimated that the number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon may reach one million at the beginning of April.

In turn, the Managing Director of Statistics Lebanon, Rabih al-Haber, said the unemployment rate among the Lebanese has reached 20% due the rising influx of refugees, adding that the number of the displaced Syrians may reach one and a half million in March.
