France’s Fabius says Lebanese cabinet comes as a “sign of hope”

French Foreign Affairs Minister Laurent Fabius said on Thursday that the new Lebanese cabinet was a "ray of hope" for the country, noting that agreement over the new cabinet came in the wake of a regional-international agreement.

However, Fabius warned against the severe repercussions of the growing influx of Syrian refugees into Lebanon, which has become equivalent to one third of the Lebanese population.

"Imagine France being suddenly burdened by 15 to 20 million people," Fabius said in a diplomatic-economic meeting with a group of Arab elites in Paris.

On another note, the French minister described the situation in Syria as "tragic", saying that Syria's turmoil has become an international matter that has become more complicated and difficult.

"There's only a political solution to the Syrian plight," he said, urging the opposition and the regime to reach agreement.

Fabius also stressed that "his country could in any way support terrorist groups in Syria."
