Bishop Mazloum to LBCI: Patriarch Rai's visit to Jerusalem is "only religious"
Bishop Samir Mazloum said on Saturday that Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai is not a "man of politics", stressing that he will pay a "religious visit" to Jerusalem.

Mazloum's comments were made during a phone call with Nharkom Said TV show in which he asserted that Israel does not need excuses to exploit details of Patriarch Rai's visit to Jerusalem.

On Friday, Rai confirmed he would join Pope Francis on his upcoming historic trip to occupied Jerusalem later this month, becoming the first head of Lebanon’s Maronite Church to visit Israel since it was founded in 1948.

Because Lebanon considers itself technically in a state of war with Israel, Lebanese citizens and officials are banned under Lebanese laws from visiting Israel.

On another note, Bishop Mazloum reiterated Rai's keenness on holding the presidential elections on their due time, urging MPs to attend the election session.

Last Wednesday, the Lebanese parliament convened in the session session and failed to elect a new president.
