Minister Azzi to LBCI: Some Lebanese factions deliberately hindering presidential elections

Minister of Labor Sajaan Azzi accused on Wednesday some Lebanese factions of deliberately hindering the presidential elections, calling on the March 8 camp to declare its candidate for the presidential bid.

Azzi's comments were made during a phone call with Nharkom Said TV show in which he said that the Kataeb party leader Amin Gemayel considers the presidential race to be under threat, prompting him to hold talks with various Lebanese leaders in an attempt to launch a national initiative.

He also noted that Gemayel suspended his candidacy for the presidency in order to discuss with allies ways to spare the country a political crisis.

Azzi concluded by saying that a presidential vacuum is unacceptable at the Baabda Palace.

Earlier, Azzi had told As-Seyassah newspaper that the initiative launched by the Kataeb leader Amin Gemayel will not be limited to Maronite figures but will include Lebanese leaders of all sects.

Lebanese MPs failed in the first, second and third rounds of the vote to elect a new president due to disputes between the March 8 and 14 camps.

President Michel Sleiman's tenure ends in May 2014 but the constitutional period to elect a new head of state began on March 25.
