Syrian Information Minister to LBCI: Mashnouq's decision 'legally invalid'

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoabi said on Monday that the latest decision issued by Lebanese Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq is "legally invalid".

The Interior Ministry said on Saturday that all displaced Syrians and those registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees are asked to refrain from entering Syria as of June 1, 2014, under penalty of losing their refugee status in Lebanon.

In an interview with LBCI's Nharkom Said TV show that was broadcast live from Damascus, Zoabi said the ministry's decision will prevent over half a million of Syrian refugees in Lebanon from casting their ballots in the Syrian presidential elections.

He added however that this decision is an " internal Lebanese matter".

On another note, Zoabi said the incidents taking place in Syria constitute a major political shift, stressing that his country has respected democracy.

"President Bashar al-Assad did not name deputies but was contributing, as the head of the Ba'ath party, to the nomination of the party's candidates for the parliamentary elections," Zoabi said.

"The percentage of political opposition in Syria is low and the opposition is not unified," he added.

The minister also noted that the committee supervising the Syrian presidential elections is a higher judicial committee, stressing that the electoral process will be broadcast live since "they have nothing to fear at all".
