Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai contacted on Wednesday each of the Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Jean Kahwaji, General Security Chief Major General Abbas Ibrahim, Director General of the Internal Security Forces Major General Ibrahim Basbous, and the Director General of State Security Major General George Qoraa, and tackled with them the security situation prevailing over the country.
Rai offered condolences on the martyrs who have fallen in recent terrorist acts.
The Patriarch also hailed the role and the efforts deployed by the security apparatuses in maintaining security and uncovering terrorist networks.
A suicide bomber blew up his car on Monday night near an army checkpoint, killing a security officer, identified as Abdul Karim Hodroj and wounding several people watching the FIFA World Cup game in a nearby cafe.
The Abdullah Azzam brigades, a Lebanon-based al Qaeda affiliate, claimed responsibility for the Tayouneh explosion.
The bombing came just three days after a failed attempt to kill one of the top security officials in Lebanon, which has suffered a wave of sectarian violence linked to the civil war in neighboring Syria.
On another note, Rai met with the Russian ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin, the Chinese ambassador Jiang Jiang, the UK ambassador Tom Fletcher, the US ambassador David Hale, the French Charge d'Affaires Jerome Kuchar, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly and Vatican's Ambassador to Lebanon Gabriel Kacha.
