Patriarch Rai: MPs evade their duties by failing to elect new president

Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai condemned on Sunday the Lebanese rival leaders for failing to elect a new president, brushing aside all excuses as "unconvincing."

The presidential vacuum, now in its second month, has hindered the work of the Lebanese Parliament, which failed to elect a new president despite several attempts before and after the mandate of president Michel Sleiman ended on May 25.

March 14 lawmakers have attended Parliament sessions to elect a president, but boycotted other sessions saying that Parliament should not legislate while there is no president.

In turn, March 8 MPs, despite supporting legislative sessions even amid a presidential void, have boycotted sessions to elect a president saying that an agreement must be reached prior to the session with March 14 camp on a consensus candidate.

Rai accused lawmakers of evading their constitutional responsibilities, “the most important of which is electing a new president for the country.”
