Jumblatt: Islamist detainees’ file related to case of abducted soldiers

Head of the Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblatt stressed Monday the need to hasten the trials of Islamist detainees serving time in the Roumieh prison, noting that there are no more excuses justifying the delay, especially since the trials’ chamber was completed several months ago, but never used.

In his weekly statement to al-Anbaa website, Jumblatt said that “it has become clear that this pending matter is related to the issue of the abducted members of the Lebanese Armed Forces and Internal Security Forces,” pointing out that strong efforts must be exerted in this regard to free the hostages.

In this context, Jumblatt reiterated that a prisoner swap operation is categorically rejected, “since such a move will prompt similar scenarios in the future and will open the door to further kidnappings,” he stated.

“It will also leave negative effects on the morale of the military institution and the security apparatuses that seek to preserve stability and protect Lebanon’s sovereignty,” he added.
