PM Salam from New York: Refugee crisis in Lebanon should be a "major regional crisis"
Prime Minister Tammam Salam delivered on Friday during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During the speech, Salam noted that the refugee crisis should not only be a Lebanese problem but rather a "major regional crisis," adding that the international community must shoulder its responsibility in this regard.

More than one million refugees from Syria are now registered in Lebanon. The number is expected to reach 1.5 million by the end of 2014.

Salam also said that the International community must cooperate in order to fight terrorism, adding that Lebanon calls on everyone to supply it with the elements of strength to address the terror threats.

He also stressed the need to elect a president as soon as possible, adding that Lebanon prides itself with the fact that it is the only country in the Arab world that has a Christian president.

Lebanon has been without a president since May when the mandate of Michel Sleiman ended.

Parliament has failed to elect his successor due to disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a consensual candidate.

Several election sessions have been staged, but they were not held due to a boycott of the majority of March 8 bloc.
