Kaag urges Lebanon’s MPs to elect head of state as presidential deadlock enters 2nd year

The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag called on all Lebanese leaders to honor their country’s constitution, the Taef accord and the National Charter.

In a statement on Monday, Kaag urged them to prioritize the country's national interest over internal politics in order to preserve Lebanon’s stability, asking them to break the stalemate over the presidential elections the soonest possible.

As Lebanon’s presidential deadlock entered its second year, the UN official said “the unified international support for Lebanon shall be coupled with concrete measures by Lebanese leaders,” stressing that the presidential election is an internal affair.

In the same regard, Kaag asked lawmakers to fulfill their constitutional duties towards the people and to convene in a bid to elect a new head of state without further delays.

This as, Kaag lauded Prime Minister Tammam Salam “who has managed to keep the cabinet unified in spite of intense pressures and who demonstrated exceptional leadership in the face of increasingly tough conditions”.

Lebanon officially entered presidential vacuum last year on May 25 after the six-year term of former President Michel Sleiman expired.

Lawmakers have repeatedly failed to choose a successor to the head of state. The impasse highlights the stark political divisions in the country.

Lebanon's presidency, allocated to the Maronite Christian community under Lebanon's sectarian division of power, is one of the three main political offices alongside the Prime Minister - a Sunni Muslim - and parliamentary speaker - a Shi'ite.
