Jumblatt: Minorities alliances to deal a blow to Christians

The Head of the National struggle Front MP Walid Jumblatt told Al-Akhbar daily that the Christians can be a force to reckon with since they have “the power to separate and isolate” the Sunnis and the Shiites in the upcoming period. Jumblatt warned against alliances between minorities that will induce a sectarian clash.

Jumblatt was reported by the daily as saying that he endorsed using the expression of “border demarcation”, adding: “Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah advised us not to use the word demarcation since it will be strongly rejected by Syrian President Bashar Assad.”

Speaking on his latest remarks made regarding Hezbollah’s weapons, Jumblatt said: “Although the cabinet’s political statement included the people-army-resistance equation, a calm and steady discussion is needed to settle the defense strategy.”

“I personally came up with the expression of the gradual incorporation of the resistance into the State, in other words, adopting a defense strategy in line with the resistance conditions,” Jumblatt added, stressing that the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) is on good terms with Hezbollah and maintains stable and strong relations with the party.

Jumblatt told Al-Joumhouria daily that he will visit Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai in a few days, dismissing rumors that he will meet with Syrian President Bashar Assad or Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

Speaking on the issue of funding the Special tribunal for Lebanon (STL), Jumblatt said: “Every issue will be settled at the right time.”
