Divergent points of view emerge on the formation of smaller parliamentary committees

The joint parliamentary committees postponed talks over the draft election law and the formation of a smaller parliamentary committee that will be in charge of discussing the law till next Thursday, awaiting the designation of candidates’ names.

Different points of view emerged as Kataeb MP Sami Gemayel refused the formation of this committee, while LF MP George Adwan supported the idea.

In this context, Hezbollah’s MP Nawaf Moussawi  had told LBCI that efforts are being exerted to establish a new electoral law, stressing that these efforts are consistent with the Maronite Bishops’ call in which they refused to go back to the 60’s law.

Moussawi added that some parties are trying to "waste time to keep the 60’s law."

Moussawi who is attending the joint parliamentary committees meeting, stated that his party [Hezbollah] is open to any electoral law proposal that assures an adequate representation to all Lebanese parties and confessions. “Proportionality is the most suitable and just proposition to assure such representation,” he concluded.

For his part, MP Ibrahim Kanaan said that next week will witness discussions over the formation of a smaller parliamentary committee, in addition to some reforms until a consensus is reached regarding the electoral law whether it be majoritarian or proportional.    

In a similar context, MP Farid Makari stressed that talks over the establishment of a smaller committee have been postponed till next Tuesday. Failure to reach quorum however seems to have halted the session, moving it till next Thursday, he added.
