Fire erupts in furniture factory in Jadra

A fire broke out in a furniture factory in Jadra in the Iqlim Kharroub region of the Chouf Mountains south of Beirut causing the death of one worker while the fate of three other workers remains unclear.

Civil Defense teams rushed to the scene to help contain the fire, fearing that it might spread to a nearby residential complex.

Head of Jadra's Municipality Fr. Joseph Kazzi said that investigations are taking place to reveal the circumstances of the incident and pointed out that 100 workers are employed in this factory.

Fr. Kazzi said to LBCI that citizen Hisham Halal died in the fire, adding that he was not an employee. "He was repairing cooling devices inside the factory and did not find his way out of the factory," Kazzi added.

The owner of the factory said to LBCI that the Civil Defense teams were late to get to the scene and the fire extended quickly.

He added that losses are estimated to reach up to $4 million and the preliminary information indicates that the fire was caused by electric friction.
