MP Gemayel: The interest of the Lebanese surpasses that of the refugees

Following the Kataeb Party Meeting, MP Sami Gemayel held a press conference whereby he said that the Lebanese government is to be blamed for the disastrous condition caused by the storm.         

As for the electoral law, Gemayel assured the party’s rejection to the 1960’s electoral law and expressed its support to hold the elections on due time on the baseis of the 50 smaller districts law which was agreed upon with MP Botrous Harb and the Lebanese Forces.                  

MP Gemayel confirmed the Kataeb party’s commitment to the Orthodox Gathering’s electoral law should the "other team also adopt it" adding, “we hope that the sub-committee’s work will yield positive results in terms of a suitable electoral law.”                 

“We want an electoral law that best serves all Lebanese parties,” he said.                

“Christians yesterday agreed on the Orthodox gathering draft law, but we still have one week to solve this issue,” he said.             

On the file of the Syrian refugees, Gemayel said that they fear the government’s inaptness in sheltering the increasing refugee influx.                           

“We call for the monitoring of the borders so that the government can count and register the number of refugees,” he added.                       

Gemayel said that refugees coming from Syria will settle in Palestinian refugee camps, causing an inevitable inflation which will delay their return and asked the Lebanese Army Forces to fulfill their duties in this regard.          

He called on the government to form a specialized crisis cell for the refugees’ file contrary to the plan passed by cabinet.         

“We want to take care of the refugees, but the interest of the Lebanese comes above all others,” he said.

As for the residence of Deputies in a hotel, Gemayel called on concerned deputies to bear the cost of their own accommodation.
