Jordan king meets Israel's Peres over peace talks

Jordan's King Abdullah told Israeli President Shimon Peres on Monday that Jewish settlement building on occupied Palestinian territory was a major hurdle to reviving peace talks, a palace official said.         

Their meeting comes after a period of frosty ties between the neighbors. Abdullah has accused Israel of derailing peace talks by stepping up settlement building in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, which Palestinians seek for an independent state.           

"His Majesty stressed the necessity that Israel end all unilateral steps, especially all forms of settlement building, which poses a real and major hurdle against efforts to attain peace," the official told Reuters.         

Peres briefed the monarch on measures Israel planned to rebuild trust with the Palestinian Authority, the official said.
