Syrian sanctions: Is Lebanon in the crosshairs?

In light of the Arab economic and financial sanctions against Syria, rumors are circulating about potential loopholes through which trade can continue. Some are even questioning the extent to which these sanctions will impact Syria.       

While some experts say that Lebanon is the lung through which Syria breathes, others refute this theory from a geographic perspective.           

Former finance minister George Korm told LBCI that Syria does not need a passage for it has access to the sea. It also has outlets through Iran, the Caucasus and Russia, making it exceedingly difficult to choke completely.         

In fact, closing the borders to Syria harms the Lebanese economy, not the other way around. Syria is Lebanon’s only available land outlet; it has a powerful and diversified economy characterized by self-sufficiency in foodstuffs and enjoys several outlets to foreign markets.
