U.N. Security Council will hold on Thursday preliminary urgent consultations to impose broader sanctions that will include non-proliferation of weapons and travel bans. The funds of the Syrian regime’s officials, including those of President Assad, his relatives and his entourage, will be frozen by virtue of a draft law sponsored by the U.S., U.K., France, German and Portugal. Russia and other countries opposed the draft law as soon as it was circulated amongst the other 15 members.
The EU adopted on Tuesday new sanctions against the Syrian regime targeting five high-ranked officers, Rafik Shehadeh, Jameh Jameh, Nawfal Al Houssein, Mohammad Zamrini and Ghassan Khalil all of whom hold high positions in the Syrian military intelligence.
The officers’ European assets were frozen and they are prohibited from receiving a European visa.
The list included the Al Quds Brigade of the Iranian revolutionary guard accused by the EU of providing technical assistance to the Syrian security apparatus in the uprising.
