Syria force surround town of Rastan after defections
An armoured Syrian force surrounded the town of Rastan, near Homs, on Monday after the defection of tens of soldiers from the area, activists and residents said. This represents the latest operation to counter dissent within the military during a five month popular uprising across Syria.

At least 40 light tanks and armoured vehicles, and 20 buses of troops and Military Intelligence, deployed at 5:30 a.m. at the highway entrance of Rastan, 20 km (12 miles) north of the city of Homs and began firing heavy machineguns at the town, two residents said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the convoy then entered Hit, two kilometres (1.2 miles) from the border with Lebanon, early Monday morning.

The local coordinating committees in Syria said the military campaign on Monday was centered on the Deir al-Zour province, where tanks invaded the province’s towns and the city of al-Bukamal, leading to many injuries.

The coordinating committees added that the security forces scattered a sit-in outside Badr mosque in the al-Maliki neighborhood in Damascus, arresting dozens of citizens.
