REPORT: Supporters of Arab Liberation Party protest Geagea’s presidential candidacy

Supporters of the Arab Liberation Party led by former Prime Minister Omar Karami called on Tuesday for a gathering to be held around 4:30 PM at the Abdel Hamid Karami Square in Tripoli to protest the candidacy of Lebanese Forces Chief Samir Geagea for the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, various banners signed by mayors and members of Tripoli’s municipality and clergymen were raised in the northern city, criticizing the support of some deputies to LF’s Geagea.

Geagea was first sentenced to death for the car bomb attack on then defense minister Michel al-Murr. But the sentence was immediately commuted to life imprisonment.

He had been jailed for 11 years over his war crimes and assassinations, including that of former PM Rashid Karami. His sentence ended by a public amnesty.

He was released from prison on the 26 of July 2005.
