REPORT: Economy Minister Hakim says health condition of wheat silos ‘improving’
Economy Minister Alain Hakim said on Monday that the health standards at the wheat silos inside the Beirut Port are improving, noting that they have been fully isolated from birds and rodents.

“Officials at the Beirut port rectified the conditions of the wheat silos,” Hakim said as he toured the port, adding “work is ongoing and renovations will end within two months”.

On the 30th of December 2014, Hakim stressed that the situation at the wheat silos should be immediately addressed, pointing out that cooperation is ongoing with Health Minister Wael Abou Faour and Minister of Agriculture Akram Chehayeb in order to resolve the matter within 10 days.

At the time Chehayeb stated that the state of hygiene and cleanliness at the wheat silos is catastrophic, saying “this situation should be addressed the soonest possible”.

For his part, Abou Faour noted that “the Lebanese citizens are sharing wheat with rats and pigeons,” adding “reforms carried out in the recent past are not enough”.
