Shea: Bassil expressed willingness to break with Hezbollah on certain conditions

US ambassador Dorothy Shea appeared on Monday in a video whereby she commented on the statements made by head of the Free Patriotic Movement MP Gebran Bassil during his latest press conference.

In the video, Shea noted that the newly imposed US sanctions are against an individual and not the party as the United States is not sanctioning or “destroying the FPM.”

Shea welcomed Bassil’s desire to contest the designation in a court of law in the United States.

On another note, Shea said that Bassil expressed willingness "to break with Hezbollah on certain conditions."

“He actually expressed gratitude that the US had got him to see how the relationship is disadvantageous to the party,” she added.

She also noted that key advisers told her that they encouraged him “to make this historic decision.”

Shea concluded by saying that the US undertook this action in solidarity with the Lebanese people who “for over a year have demanded their political leaders to end business as usual.”
