Militancy in Iraq and Syria "alarming" - Russian deputy FM

Russia's deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov, on a trip to Damascus on Saturday (June 28), expressed his concerns about the spread of militant groups such as Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

He said a united effort, working with the United States and its allies in Europe, was what was needed to combat the threat posed by such insurgents.

"This is an alarming phenomenon, it requires united efforts, it requires thoroughly a thought-through political line, an all-inclusive approach," he said.

"Our understanding is that the United States and their allies in Europe will abide by those basic principles when formulating their political line to what is happening both in Iraq and in Syria."

Ryabkov was in Damascus to meet with Syria's Foreign Minister Walid Muallem.

Moscow, which is trying to raise its diplomatic and economic influence in the Middle East, has given President Bashar al-Assad crucial support during the three-year civil war and blocked wider Western attempts to punish him with sanctions for the use of force against civilians.
