U.S., allies conduct air strikes in Syria and Iraq
The United States and its coalition partners have launched another round of air strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria, conducting 26 strikes since early Friday.

In a statement on Saturday from the Combined Joint Task Force leading the military operation, officials said 13 strikes hit in Syria and also 13 hit in Iraq.

In Syria, 12 air strikes targeted Islamic State positions near Kobani. In Iraq, five strikes hit near Mosul and five near Tal Afar, the statement said.

Earlier, the Pentagon said U.S. efforts to train Iraqi forces and moderate Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State militants are moving forward, but that insurgents still control about 21,000 square miles (54,400 sq. kilometers) of Iraq.

Rear Adm. John Kirby, Pentagon press secretary, said about 270 square miles (700 sq. kilometers) in Iraq have been regained from militants in the past six months, mostly by Kurdish forces in the north. He says control of land will continually change over time, and it will be a long struggle.

Kirby said training has begun in all four planned sites in Iraq. He said an advance team of fewer than 100 U.S. troops will soon head to training sites in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar to begin preparations for the Syrian rebel training. Trainers will deploy in the coming weeks.
