Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is heading Sunday to New York to ask the U.N. Security Council to endorse his bid for statehood.

Nabil Abu Rudayna, spokesperson for the Palestinian Authority, told AFP that Abbas will meet with many officials in New York, paving the way for his submission of request for full membership as well as his historical speech to the U.S.

Abu Rudayna stressed that the Palestinians are heading into a delicate phase, adding that “we will be standing at a crossroads: Just peace or instability across the region.”

Abu Rudayna urged the international community to support justice, peace and stability so that the political deadlock due to Israel’s intransigence will not lead to an uncontrollable situation.

In his turn, chief negotiator Saib Arikat said that Abbas, following his historical speech, will submit his bid for full membership to U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon.
