Iraqi PM warns of dangers of an impending civil war, calls for dialogue

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki warned of attempts to incite civil war in the country after a wave of violence swept through Iraq leaving 140 civilians dead in the past three days.

Maliki addressed clerics, and all individuals “worried about Iraq’s future, to take the step and not remain silent about those who want to reignite the flame of a sectarian civil war,” in a broadcast aired on state television Thursday.

Fundamental groups such as al-Qaeda and terrorism are Iraq’s major enemies, Maliki said, urging all citizens to unite in the face of extremism.

“The most dangerous thing to do is to leave the situation in the hands of those who stir up conflict.”

He then slammed opposition calls to boycott the parliamentary elections.

“Demands will be met through dialogue. What can be achieved through dialogue can never be achieved with terrorism,” he said.
