Bangladesh courts sentence British Muslim leader

A Bangladesh court sentenced on Thursday the Bangladesh-born British Muslim leader Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin for his role in the killing of intellectuals during the Bangladesh liberation war in 1971.

Mueen-Uddin held senior positions in Islamic organizations in the UK and was involved in the establishment of the Muslim Council of Britain.

Mueen-Uddin's lawyer said that Mueen-Uddin rejects all the accusations against him.

Bangladesh's government says that about three million people were killed in the war, many killed by locals who collaborated with Pakistani forces.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government established the tribunal in March 2010 to trial the collaborators.
