Polish Catholic priest kidnapped in Ukraine

The Polish government and media reports said on Wednesday that a polish catholic priest has been kidnapped by pro-Russia gunmen in the eastern Ukrainian flashpoint city of Donetsk.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told reporters that consular services are deploying efforts to release the priest, adding that they are also in touch with Church officials.

The minister identified the priest as Pawel Witek and said he had been abducted on Tuesday by separatist rebels.

His abduction was confirmed by Ukraine's Bishop Marian Buczek from the Catholic diocese in Kharkiv, the Polish news agency PAP reported.

Poland has been one of the supporters of the new pro-Western government in neighboring Ukraine.

A four-member team of observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe was also abducted in the Donetsk area on Monday.
