REPORT: Alexa storm blocks several roads in Lebanon, LAF rescues stranded citizens

Heavy snowfall is reported on Friday on Alay heights and regions of upper Metn at an altitude of more than 900 meters but it did not block main roads and the international road which is open only to vehicles equipped with snow chains.

In this regard, the Internal Security Forces' Directorate General said the weather in Ouyoun al-Siman is good, noting that all roads are open to SUVs as well as vehicles equipped with snow chains, except for the Ouyoun al-Siman – Hadath Baalbek road which is blocked due to snow accumulations.

In Beiteddine, snow is falling and roads are open, except for the Maaser el-Chouf -Kefraya road which is blocked due to snow accumulations.

Turning to Zahle, snowfall is reported and all roads are open, except for Zahle-Dhour Choueir road which is open only to SUVs and vehicles equipped with snow chains.

In Baalbek, the weather is cloudy and all roads are open except for the Ainata Al Arez- Hadath Baalbek-Afqa- Ouyoun al Siman- Hermel- Qobayyat road.

Lebanese Armed Forces Units rescued citizens stuck in snow as well as others in remote areas, especially in Central and Northern Bekaa, Bcharreh, Kesserwan and Akkar.

In Akkar, ice formed in all the mountainous regions located at an altitude of 700 meters and above, leading to the closure of the majority of the mountainous towns’ roads that became only opened for equipped vehicles. In central Akkra, low temperatures and strong winds damaged the agricultural crops in plastic tents.

Elsewhere, in the towns of Kfarselwan, Tarshish and the region of upper Metn, the thickness of the snow reached 15 centimeters, while fog caused difficult visibility.

In turn, the Traffic Management Center stressed that the roads of Bteghrin -  Baskenta – Dhour al-Choueir were closed due to the accumulation of snow.

For his part, the mayor of the town of Kfartoun in Akkar Hassan al-Adraa called on the concerned officials to provide assistance for the residents of the towns and villages of the region of Jabal Akroum, describing the situation as “tragic due to the effects of the snowstorm and clod wave that isolated the said region from the rest of the Lebanese towns.”

Coastal roads:

The Traffic Management Center reported heavy traffic jam on the Karantina – Dora highway and on the old airport road from Chatila towards the airport bridge.

However, in Kaslik – Jounieh highway, the security forces removed a truck that was blocking the road, bringing back the traffic to normal.
