[VIDEO] Governor of Beirut Bans Selling Of Colored Easter Chicks

In an effort to protect children and animals alike, Governor of Beirut Judge Ziad Chbib issued Thursday a decision forbidding the selling of chicks, particularly colored ones, in the Lebanese capital.

As the Easter holidays are inching closer, vendors flock to the streets and display colored chicks in order to sell them. But have we ever pondered about the risks of dyeing baby chicks and handling poultry?

Although hatchery owners say the dyeing practice is harmless, animal advocates argue that spraying the birds with color is stressful, adding “dyeing the animals transforms them into novelty items that can be discarded when their colorful plumage fades away”.

Animal groups also consider dyeing chicks for Easter as one of the many ways humans degrade, harm and disrespect innocent beings.

Health wise, live poultry commonly carry Salmonella germs so when humans handle the birds, the bacteria can spread.

Exposure to Salmonella usually causes extreme abdominal upset. In severe cases, the illness can be fatal. Approximately 400 people die each year with acute salmonellosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

It also turns out to be that children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems are most susceptible to a severe reaction.

Here’s a piece of advice: if you do come into contact with birds - be it chicks, ducklings or other live poultry -wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water immediately after and if you ever bump into those lovely baby chicks ahead of Easter, just walk away.
