Rai’s Lenten address calls on self-serving politicians to focus on the poor
Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai celebrated Mass on the First Sunday of Lent at Bkerke where he urged Lebanese officials to leverage this occasion to bring about changes that serve the public interest.

“The Great Lent is a time for change and mending relationships with other people, especially that the social and economic situation is deteriorating while political officials are still held captive by their own interests,”Rai said in his sermon.

The patriarch appealed to the political authorities to invest all public assets and funds in the public interest allowing citizens to live with affluence and decency.

“The first duty of the political authority lies in taking care of the poor and people in need in a way that boosts their patriotism and pride of their homeland,” he added.
