REPORT: Minister Chehayeb says collection of waste to be resumed tonight
Minister of Agriculture Akram Chehayeb asserted on Tuesday that the establishment of the Bourj Hammoud and the Costa Bravo landfills is the sole way to implement “the decentralization.”

Chehayeb’s comments were made during a press conference whereby he noted that he requested from the concerned companies to make the Bourj Hammoud landfill ready to receive waste by Ovtober 7.

He also said that Sukleen will resume starting from tonight the collection of waste from 45 municipalities.

Lebanon’s unprecedented waste management crisis started in July last year when the central landfill in Naameh was shut down amid the government's failure to find other alternatives.

The crisis saw streets, forests and riverbeds over flooded with garbage for several months and triggered street protests against the entire government.

Experts have long called on the government to set a comprehensive waste management solution that would include more recycling and composting to reduce the amount of garbage going into landfills.
